One of Japan's largest mid-winter mass marathons in Ibaraki, featuring legendary local aid and a fast, flat-based course. The full marathon caps at 12,000 runners on a first-come basis, with a 6-hour time limit and JAAF certification.
Late January in Hitachinaka means crisp, quiet coastal air and a flat, fast course that rewards patient pacing—save something for the final rises. Between training, wander the seaside paths of Tokai Village for ocean views, and warm up with a bowl of hitachi beef ramen or locally caught ankimo in the city's cozy eateries.

70m
A flat-based, record-friendly course with only gentle undulations for most of the way; the sting comes after 35 km, where three back-to-back rises test tired legs. Maximum elevation differential is only about 20 m. The course runs through Hitachinaka City and neighbouring Tokai Village in Ibaraki Prefecture, with exposed coastal stretches where a steady northerly breeze blows.
