The route runs out from the Hinata Miyazaki Prefectural Sports Park through the city center and Miyazaki Shrine area, then south down the palm-lined Tropical Road toward Aoshima island before turning back to the same stadium finish. Runners follow the palm-lined Tropical Road with the Pacific on one side and are cheered the whole way by roughly 2,500 high-school student volunteers, whose taiko, dance and shouting squads have become the event's signature.
