Distinct scientific focus: Sensory neuron classification; Sensory neuron phenotyping; Ion channels of sensory neuron subtypes; Mechanisms of peripheral sensitization; Neuro-immune mechanisms; Visceral pain mechanisms; Therapeutic strategies targeting nociceptors – Direct access to leading experts: ample time for discussion, Q&A, and informal exchanges – Intimate format (≤150 participants): easier to connect with speakers and peers – Early-Career Researchers spotlight: strong opportunities to present, be seen, and engage – Support available: FENS and The Brain Prize stipends to facilitate attendance This scientific conference will bring together researchers studying primary sensory neurons and their central role in somatic sensation, nociception, and chronic pain. The meeting will highlight recent advances, including their molecular diversity, physiology, peripheral and central connectivity, and roles in detecting mechanical, thermal and chemical stimuli. Particular emphasis will be placed on mechanisms that promote sensory neuron hyperexcitability, sensitization and maladaptive plasticity. Topics will include ion channel remodeling, altered intracellular signaling, neuroimmune interactions, mitochondrial and metabolic dysfunction, intercellular communication, and adaptive responses triggered by inflammation, tissue injury, or nerve injury. By integrating electrophysiology, imaging, spatial and mulit-omic technologies, human physiology and tissue studies with disease-relevant models, the conference will explore how normally protective sensory pathways can become drivers of persistent pain. The program will also include a dedicated session on current advances in analgesic discovery for chronic pain. Discussions will focus on emerging molecular targets, translational platforms, human sensory neuron models, biomarker-informed approaches, and therapeutic strategies designed to reduce pathological activity while preserving normal sensory function. Together, these sessions aim to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and accelerate the translation of fundamental discoveries into new treatments for chronic pain. For enquiries, please contact the Brain Conferences Team at brain@fens.org Organised by FENS in collaboration with the Lundbeck Foundation , awarder of The Brain Prize , these bi-annual conferences bring together in an intimate setting outstanding researchers in key areas of contemporary neuroscience to discuss current concepts and define challenges for future research.
